Spain

One of the most beautiful cities in Spain is Seville, in the very south of the country. You should at least stay a week. During Easter they have the "Semana Santa", the "holy week", and that certainly is a spectacle worth seeing. During the week there are carrying the crosses and madonnas from the churches. In a long procession consisting of several "brotherhoods", they are carried through the streets of the town. Thousands of people watch the processions, and whenever a madonna is carried out of the church, everybody gives loud shouts of "guapa" (meaning "beautiful"). Everybody is on their feet until very late at night, there is music and dancing and food and drinks. During on night, they even have "mute processions". They can be a bit scary, because the brotherhood members are clad in dark robes and pointed hats that cover the whole head, with only slits cut out to enable them to see. Their feet are bound by chains, so that the only sound you hear is the clinging of the chains, while they shuffle silently along, carrying the cross. It is awe-inspiring though and certainly a spectacle that you will not easily forget - and one that you can only experience in Seville during Easter. Make sure you book well in advance, because the Semana Santa is a very popular time!
